FindWhat Launches Pay-Per-Call Ad Program

Monday, September 27th, 2004

This is a pretty interesting opportunity. You only pay when someone calls you. It is getting closer to paying per acquisition which is something I predict we will see happen at search engines in the next few years.

I would highly recommend giving this a try:

New SEO Contest: Seraphim Proudleduck

Monday, September 27th, 2004

Need some extra cash? You might try the new search engine optimization contest. Simply rank #1 for the phrase: “seraphim proudleduck”
Here’s the rub, you suddenly will be in the mix with a bunch of other optimizers. The prize is $1700.

I’ll let you know the secret… If you have a strong online community and you can get all of your visitors to link to your new “seraphim proudleduck” page, you have a good chance of winning. If you don’t have that kind of community pull, I probably would just go back to optimizing something easy like “mesothelioma”. It is currently tied for $100 per click for the top 4 positions over at Overture. #5 guy is only willing to spend $99.98 per click. Come on mesotheliomanews.com, run with the big dogs! It’s only 2 more cents.

Google’s serious hijack problem

Monday, September 27th, 2004

This is just another thing to be aware of if you suddenly find your site has disappeared from Google.

In a nut shell: Someone does an instant redirect to your site, Google thinks it is duplicate content and removes your site. Then the other person either slanders you or drives the content back to their site. This technique can also be used to steal your pagerank because Google thinks you have moved and therefore all of the links you have built up on your site should be awarded to this new site.

Beating the sandbox effect

Monday, September 13th, 2004

Beating the sandbox effect: “The more people link to your site, the more high quality links you get, the faster your new site will be indexed. The better your content, the higher the chance that people are willing to link to you. (to answer your first question)
But usually I don’t wait for people to do this by themselves. So the other options are:
- put links on other websites I already have
- kindly ask other webmasters
- pay for a link(s) ”

That’s the short of it. If you want to do well in Google, the above sentences are all that’s to it. But the problems don’t end there. After you have a bunch of great links and great content, we are still seeing people placed in this virtual “sandbox”. This means even though your pages are indexed and you can see them in Google’s listings, you may not see them appear for the targeted key phrases you are interested in.

Some people are reporting not being able to get out of this sandbox since May. There is some speculation that Google may be doing this in part to disinterest optimization efforts. If they don’t index your site right away for your big key phrases maybe you’ll just quit optimizing.

Plan your work and work your plan. We know what works: good content and good links. Just keep plugging away at those things and everything will take care of itself.

Don’t get discouraged.

Despite their high-profile market presence, less than 10% of Fortune 100 companies use search engine optimization effectively
This is interesting that this is still the case. iProspect put out a similar finding a couple of years ago. They still don’t get it. Maybe they never will.
