The goal is to find a 2 word phrase that gives only one result on Google - not 2, not 0, just 1.
Googlewhacking: The Search for The One True Googlewhack

Your goal: find that elusive query (two words - no quote marks) with a single, solitary result!

It’s the electronic equivalent to the Sunday New York Times Crossword Puzzle.

Google Data Centers

Friday, May 23rd, 2003

I bet you thought that when you went to www.google.com you were going to a single place that held billions of web pages. The reality is, when you place a search at www.google.com the results are actually coming from one of these data centers:

www2.google.com
www3.google.com
www-dc.google.com
www-ex.google.com
www-zu.google.com
www-ab.google.com
www-sj.google.com
www-va.google.com
www-in.google.com
www-fi.google.com

These are the locations of the data centers that I was able to track down:
sj is in San Jose
dc is in Washington, DC
zu is in Zurich Switzerland
ex is in Santa Clara
va is in Herndon, Virginia

When Google makes an update, one data center changes and slowly populates the new data to other centers until they finally are all updated with the same data.
This is the "Google Dance."

This is especially interesting right now because there has been a May update (called ‘Dominic’ at WebMasterWorld) that has been in flux an especially long time.

The sj data center has been creating a lot of turmoil for those who keep a close eye on all of this.
Here is an interesting site that talks a bit more about these updates: http://dance.efactory.de/

Overture Beats Google with Superior Results, Listing Control and Service

One thousand clicks from Overture generate almost double the average revenue as 1,000 clicks from Google’s product.

This actually has not been our experience. But it is interesting to consider.

Converting Word to HTML
Have you ever tried converting a Word document to FrontPage? It can be a code nightmare.
But fortunately there are work arounds to accommodate this code bloat. Microsoft has put out a Word to html converter.
You can download it here.
This tool makes some nice css code in the head of the page and much of the extraneous code is removed from the body of the html. It’s a free download. So you might find it worthwhile.
However, for my purposes, I found that using WordPad is by far the best solution. I simply copy and pasted my content from Word to WordPad. And from there I pasted that content into FrontPage. The code was unbelievably condensed. It kept basic font characteristics in place but didn’t add any of the excessive style code that Word transfers. Also, links and table structures stayed intact - also in a nice, clean format.
This solution wouldn’t work if you were trying to transfer images from Word to FrontPage. But it would be quite simple to add those later. And actually, the less formatting I get from Word the better. I can easily modify layout once I get it into FrontPage.
So, if you find yourself moving content from Word to FrontPage I highly recommend giving this a try. It will make your pages load faster and the search engines will love it!

Overture Readies New Search Products

Overture Services said it would release its paid inclusion and contextual marketing offerings in the next three months, as it tries to expand and diversify its product line.

Overture loves to monetize search. It’s going to be interesting to see their new product lines.

Jim Wilson Memorial
I can’t imagine there is a search engine marketer that wasn’t effected and inspired by the resources Mr. Wilson provided. His forum was the launching point for many search engine careers - mine included. He truly was a pioneer in the search engine arena. He will be missed by many.

The Register - Google to fix blog noise problem

Google is to create a search tool specifically for weblogs, most likely giving material generated by the self-publishing tools its own tab.

There are many weblogs out in the world today. But the information available isn’t always of the highest quality. So, Google is potentially going to help the problem with a section of their site all about blogs.

Paid Inclusion Hot, LookSmart Not

LookSmart is the latest search company to warn of lower earnings this year due to the fierce competition in the industry. Both Overture Services and FindWhat recently said they would feel the effects of increased competition in the crowded search industry.

While I wouldn’t want to be an active investor in any of these companies, this all really is quite good news. Overture, themselves, admit that more competition makes them a better company.
Google has really shaken up the internet community. Not only do they offer highly relevant search results, but they also are making a bunch of money - something I don’t think many companies really anticipated.
So, if you ever feel the competitors of your industry are nipping at your heels, just take solace in the worlds of Overture, LookSmart and FindWhat. They are going to be better companies for their customers because of it… or they’re not :)
