Link Popularity

Definition:

A count of the number of links pointing to a website. These are sometimes referred to as inbound links. Many search engines now count links in their algorithms.

Link popularity is not simply the sheer number of links pointing to a site. The quality and relationship of the linking site play important parts. If a site that links to your site has no relation to what you have to offer it is likely going to do no good. Also, any site that lists many unrelated sites will also have little effect. These kinds of sites are often referred to as link farms.

Link popularity is currently one of the most important aspects of a search engine's ranking criteria.
