This year, the guide has highlighted and scored the top 55 North American companies and, in the report's second- year publication, SageRock.com has held its top positioning, receiving five out of five stars. Marketing Sherpa is still the only guide to be published for the young search engine optimization (SEO) industry, and it helps companies select an appropriate vendor for their web-marketing needs.

Industry pressure encouraged the buyer's guide to restructure its grading system this year. Once based on school-style grades from A to F and rankings from 1-50, the guide now ranks firms by a movie-like, five- star system. The new system leaves room for more companies to excel in the ratings, with 17 firms sharing the five-star honor. To help buyers narrow down the field to select a firm, the guide also gives each firm a monetary rating between 1-5 dollar signs ($) and lists each firm's specialties and service offerings. 

The stars were given based on actual search engine results submitted by the participating SEO companies. Scoring was based on a point system. Firms got up to five points on a results competitiveness scale. If a phrase result had over 100K competitors online, the company received 5 points. Four points were given if a phrase result had 50K-100K competitors, three points were given for 10K-50K, etc. 

Results submitted by firms were also given ranking-scale points. Companies were given 10 points if their phrase result appeared in the top 1-3 spots, 8 points if it was in the 4-6 spot, etc. 

To score the firm, competitive points and ranking scale points were multiplied, and then divided by ten to determine the star rating. 

SageRock provided key phrases results that were in the top 3 spots and had over 100K competitors, earning our company five stars. SageRock remained steady in the monetary ranking with $$ out of a possible five, and we also specialized in four out of five potential services, the fifth being international SEO promotion, which SageRock does not plan to pursue.

He adds, "Just like last year, we were given top marks for quality and $$ in our monetary ranking and those ratings are right on. Our target market is the small to mid-sized business with $3,500 to $30,000 in their web marketing budgets. Companies with 4 and 5 dollar signs are targeting companies with budgets that start with $30,000 budgets. But the truth is, we don't really provide a very different level of work compared to these giant firms. As a smaller company ourselves, we're simply able to maneuver better within this economy, and that allows us to offer quality SEO services to a smaller business market."

The guide excels beyond being a buyer's guide by also being an industry educator, educating consumers about search engine marketing and how services effect a company's bottom line. They also discuss the debate of doing search engine marketing work in house or hiring the services out, and highlight what a company will really be paying for when hiring a firm.
