Let's talk about TeomaSure, it sounds like the name of some beautiful Hollywood actress, but it is actually a new search engine that is making its mark on a saturated search engine scene. It's inspired a buzz in the search engine world and here's why. When you search on Teoma, you'll see three unique groupings of results, as opposed to just a long list of sites. At the top of the page, search results are grouped by topic. Then there is a general web page list, and finally there is a section called expert links on the right side of the page. Sites grouped by topic are in the "Web Pages Grouped By Topic" category. In this section, sites that match search results are grouped into categories that users can click on and drill down through (very directory-esk). If a user isn't interested in drilling down by topic, they can start looking at Teoma's main results, which are basically a ranked list of all sites that match the search results. The expert link section is an interesting feature that lists resource sites that have a lot of links to sites on the searched topic. The site has been in a beta state because it has indexed about 100 million web pages to date and is building up to at least 250 million pages. For a comparison, Google has indexed about 625 million sites. And speaking of that comparison, Teoma and Google have been sharing the news spotlight a lot lately in regard to their indexing technology. That's because Teoma is giving Google a run for the money as a great spidering engine. This is a real simple wrap-up of the technology: Google searches the entire web, without doing this initial community lumping, and rates sites from the entire web. The argument is that maybe Teoma's results will have a higher quality -- tapping into more subject oriented, authoritative kinds of sites. There was one thing Google had that Teoma didn't however, and that was a successful partnership with another engine. But not anymore. Ask Jeeves has successfully completed the integration of Teoma search technology into Ask Jeeves (Ask.com). Teoma was acquired by Ask Jeeves in September 2001. Since introducing the results last month, Ask Jeeves has reported a 25% increase in the number of times a user selects a search result. Site abandonment has also decreased by 15%.
