Back to Basics -- Submissions

Everyone can use a refresher on search engine promotion basics, so we thought we'd review some fundamentals of submitting and resubmitting to the engines.

If The Site Is Optimized:

Start with the index page and submit to these spidering engines:

http://www.altavista.com/sites/search/addurl
http://www.directhit.com/util/addurl.html
http://www.alltheweb.com/add_url.php
http://www.google.com/addurl.html
http://hotbot.lycos.com/addurl.asp
http://submitit.bcentral.com/msnsubmit.htm

Then submit the index page to these directories:
http://dmoz.org/add.html
http://www.looksmart.com/ (free if non-commercial / $299 if commercial)
http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/ (free if non-commercial / $299 per year if commercial - this option is not right for everyone, but most everyone)

Also, look into bidding on these pay-per-click engines for the entire site:

http://www.findwhat.com/content/promote.asp

After the index page is submitted, submit one optimized page of the site, per day, to each of the spidering engines, but not the directories. Once the entire site has been submitted, sit back and wait for at least 6 to 8 weeks while running reports to track new positions and position shifting.

After about 2 months, you'll be able to chart different patterns and isolate pages that are not ranking as well as others, and to note those that were doing well, but may have slipped in ranking due to competition increases. For those pages not indexing well, tweak them (or have the optimizer do it) and resubmit one per day. For those slipping, tweaking the page is not always necessary, so first try just resubmitting fallen pages, one per day to spidering engines. Keep up on resubmissions regularly and positioning will be maintained and increased over the long term.

If The Site Is Not Optimized:

Optimization is not as big of an issue when submitting to the human-edited directories, so definitely submit the site to:
http://dmoz.org/add.html
http://www.looksmart.com/ (free if non-commercial / $299 if commercial)
http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/

(free if non-commercial / $299 per year if commercial - this option is not right for everyone, but most everyone)

Be careful, however, not to have a site under construction or incomplete in any way (if building a directory, it needs to be built up to a fairly large size before submission). Also make sure it is designed to load well and be seen on Netscape as well as Internet Explorer.

After that, it will serve you well to submit/bid with the pay-per-click engines:
http://www.overture.com/d/about/advertisers/
http://www.findwhat.com/content/promote.asp

In regards to spidering engine submissions, by all means, submit the index page and see how you do. In less competitive markets, a well-written, high-
content, simply designed site may do well on these engines without optimization. You can also submit individual pages within the site, but remember, the index page of a site will almost always do better than a sub page. That means that if you have a flash intro as an index page, or an index page with heavy graphics or java script you may not see positive results.

After submitting to the directories, pay-per-click engines, and getting the index page in the spidering engines, track results and see how the site is performing. You may be surprised at the traffic directories and pay-per-click engines can generate. But if you're not doing all that well and are ready to take promotion to the next level, then start the optimization process yourself for the site or hire someone to help.

After optimizing pages (either within the site or Doorways), submit those pages (one-page-per-day) only to the spidering engines, wait 6 to 8 weeks, track results, and then begin resubmission to those spidering engines as necessary.
