This is an interesting list of advertising agencies and graphic design firms in Ohio. It looks pretty comprehensive. I just came across it and thought I might put it up here. I'll spend more time with it and see how the links look.

This is impressive. A county planning commission is not typically a place you would look to find innovative uses of technology. But the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission is an exception to that line of thinking.
They are using a blog to notify the community of job openings and a wide variety of announcements. To top it off, they've been doing it since December of 2003! I don't follow Cleveland politics as much as I follow Akron politics so please excuse my lack of knowledge on that capability.

Look at the the #1 most searched phrase: Ohio is for Lovers.

It gets more searches than any other phrase for Ohio, according to Wordtracker. Additionally, it's not super competitive. It has 25,100 competing pages in Google with that exact phrase. Compare that with "Ohio lottery" with 103,000 competing pages. But "Ohio lottery" also has less than half the traffic. These aren't great apples to apples comparisons here. But what I want you to see is that often there are phrases which actually get more traffic but are less comopetitive. If you have the option for choosing either phrase, you obviously want to pick the one with more traffic but less competitors.

Each advertiser here has an account with Yahoo Search Marketing. These click fees are deducted from that account. So, yes. If you go to Yahoo.com, type in 'Ohio accident lawyers' and click on the #1 sponsored listing, that law firm is going to be charged $14.00. Actually, he is only going to be charged $7.51 because $14 is his maximum he is willing to bid. The fact that you know exactly what your competitor is willing to pay as a maximum price is a big advantage for you and a bad position for him. Imagine if you went to an auction and you knew exactly what the person bidding against you was willing to pay. That would change the way you bid, wouldn't it?

Knowing this information, if I was in an intense bidding war with the person willing to pay $14 per click for 'ohio accident lawyers', I would probably bid $13.99 as my maximum bid. That way I'm only paying $7.01 to be just above the #3 person, but I'm forcing the #1 person to pay his full $14. What I'm saying here is, the #1 person shouldn't be doing what he is doing. It's like playing poker and showing all your cards. It's just not smart business.

I thought it might be interesting to do the first post with some good old fashioned key phrase research.

If you haven't ever done key phrase research before, here's the background of it all...

Key phrase research is by far the most important part of starting a search engine marketing campaign. If you target the wrong phrases, they may be too competitive for you to realistically appear for. Or you may be able to rank well, but there is no one searching on the phrase you chose. That can be equally as bad.

I thought you might like to see the top 300 most searched phrases that contain the word "Ohio". I have used Wordtracker to compile these statistics.

Before you look at these stats, here are the definitions of the columns:

Count: The number of times people have entered this keyword from 315,605,657 search queries. These have been taken from the various MetaCrawlers that we survey.

Competing: The number of competing web pages in google (Search Engine).
We are using 'exact match searching', where the keywords are enclosed by quotation marks. We recommend using 'exact match searching' as you are actually competing with sites which have used the keyword exactly as typed in by the user.

I'm sorry the formatting isn't a little better here. Blogger is a touch limited when it comes to this. But you should be able to get the picture:
