Succeed online with a dynamic site
I wanted to point out a press release from what some call "The Rolls-Royce" of search engine optimization companies. IProspect, is a major force in this industry and has yielded amazing results for its clients. To prove this, they put out a press release about their client, EDMUNDS.COM - provider of third party automotive information. IProspect, "succeeded in driving 1.3 million people to Edmunds.com from search engines and directories in June of this year," the press release reports. They go on to write, "Edmunds.com out-ranks its competition on its keyword universe by a factor of 10-to-1."
The reasons for this success are not because of any major secrets or high-end 'tricks'. If you go to the site it becomes pretty obvious.
Instead of all of the links being graphics, like so many sites, they are text links. If you go to the "new" and "used" car sections of their site you will notice that the web addresses have no non-alphanumeric characters. And again, going to each subsection, all of the links are text links. And each and every single page has a relevant title that is directly related to the page. Additionally, each and every page has text that focuses on the specific targeted key phrase.
This means they have thousands of pages that are easily indexable by the search engines. I did a search on Google and found 51,900 pages indexed from the edmunds.com site.
You can see those results here:

This is done simply by changing how the database is called on the server-side. Once the server is set up this way then current pages, and pages to come, will all get indexed by the search engines.
We are going to see many sites developed like this in the future - probably not the too near future, however. Most development companies don't realize the power of setting up a database this way. And the designers feel very uncomfortable giving up so much layout control by having so much non-controlled text on the site.
Additionally, there are many existing database driven sites that would have to be completely rebuilt to make them search engine accessible. (There are other techniques for existing sites, but they are a bit out of the realm of this post.) The downside to this is companies are automatically removing themselves from achieving much, if any, search engine traffic.
So, if you are thinking about rebuilding your database driven site, take a lesson from edmunds.com and look into setting your site up in a similar manner. You will be so glad you did. And you will literally annihilate your competition.
