"[I would like to know] how to maintain high ranking with Google.com"
The secret to Google's recent great success has been their use of link popularity.
Higher site positioning for a particular key phrase relates directly to how many other sites have linked to your site.
In fact, it has become such a strong determining factor for Google that if you have no links coming from outside sources you very well might not get
site positioning in Google at all.
Google has become increasingly more popular by Internet users because of the high quality results it produces. And now Yahoo uses Google as its resource for secondary search results, throwing over Inktomi.
The million dollar question is: How do you get good link popularity?
Link popularity is more complicated than just getting arbitrary links. Search engines weigh the relevance and the link popularity of the sites that you have gotten links from. So if you sell car parts, a link from a gardening site is going to do you little good. There has even been some evidence that it might do you more harm than good. Having a lot of links from non-related sites
has the potential of throwing off what category the search engines think you should be in.
So first, search out sites that are similar to your field. Related directories and non-competing companies that market to your general target market are all good in increasing your link popularity.
Second, the more popular a site is, the more valuable the link they give to your site is going to be. If you are a software developer and have a link from Microsoft, that is going to increase the value of your site. The best place to find relating sites with high popularity is actually on Google. Do a search on Google.com for your main key phrases and find similar,
sites with higher site positioning. Then just start emailing these folks for links. Doing this is actually going to give you far more benefits than just being listed well on Google. These links will produce traffic for you and they will also help other search engines find your site.
Strong cross linking is one of the greatest online marketing efforts you can do for your site.
