Your competitors suck. Don’t measure yourself by them.

I’m at the world’s largest machining show: IMTS

I’m surveying companies on their use of of web marketing.

Everyone I have talked to agrees on one thing: the machining world is slow to adopt these technologies. I mean really slow.

I’ll discuss the reasons for that in my final analysis.

But there are a small few that are as advanced as anything I’ve seen.

I’m talking qr codes on machines that instantly give potential buyers all the machine’s specs.

Mobile strategies. Flickr strategies. Google Plus. Facebook ads. One company puts out a magazine with 100,000 distribution. Some of the best content marketing I’ve ever seen.

Those very few companies have one thing in common. They compare themselves to great companies in completely non-related industries. Amazon. Google. Facebook.

When I ask them if they look to their peers for direction they all laughed at me.

They have no peers when it comes to marketing.

Chances are, you are in an industry that has similarities. Most non-web industries are far behind the thinking of best use of Web marketing strategies.

Find companies you admire and learn from them. Emulate their strategies. Forget your industry. Forget your competitors. They are behind.

The list of things I like about life is MUCH longer than the things I don't like about life. So, since you don't have all day reading about the mundane things I love (some of which, btw, include: Rocky, Indy, SageRock, movies, pizza, cheesecake, running, exploring.) here are the things I don't like: Driving Meetings Zucchini (I like it fine. I'm just allergic.) I think that's pretty much it. My Twitter account is: http://twitter.com/sagerock My YouTube Channel is: http://www.youtube.com/sagerock
