University of Findlay Class Update

I just got out of my Wednesday social media senior survey class at The University of Findlay.

I’m breaking the semester up into four distinct sections.

Tonight was the end of the first section.

We now have 3 social media properties setup for the Communications Department:

The target audience is existing students. But the thought is that if we start by focusing on existing students new students and alumni will follow fairly naturally.

The biggest concern in the eyes of the department is sustainability.

They are rightfully concerned that the students will graduate and the flow of content will gradually disappear.

The initial plan from the students was to setup a social media club in the school. Everyone loved this idea.

But there is still a feeling that clubs can also fade away.

So the concern still existed.

The newest idea is to incorporate social media into all of the communication department classes. So contributing to Twitter, Facebook or Youtube would become a mandatory component of each class.

This struck me as a stroke of genius.

With this approach we would likely have to do some training with each of the teachers.

This could be a big undertaking and has some potential barriers built into it. But it seems very revolutionary and representative of the times. If this happens we would likely see the advent of a new approach to new media in the university environment.

I take no credit for any of these ideas. These are all student driven. I merely have given them the field.

Creating the social media content, followers and engagement are seemingly becoming secondary to setting a systematic foundation to making something that is lasting. This requires something actually much different than an understanding of social media tools and techniques. This requires an ability to create infrastructure. That’s not really my strong suit. I’m not the detail guy. It’s not to say I can’t do it. It’s just harder for me than doing other things. It’s a pursuit that is all worth it though. I feel like I’m a part of something revolutionary here. If this actually becomes reality this class will have created something new. We are on the edge of a new concept here.

The list of things I like about life is MUCH longer than the things I don't like about life. So, since you don't have all day reading about the mundane things I love (some of which, btw, include: Rocky, Indy, SageRock, movies, pizza, cheesecake, running, exploring.) here are the things I don't like: Driving Meetings Zucchini (I like it fine. I'm just allergic.) I think that's pretty much it. My Twitter account is: http://twitter.com/sagerock My YouTube Channel is: http://www.youtube.com/sagerock
