Google Won’t Buy NYT but May Offer Some Help
The chairman of the New York Times, Arthur Sulzberger, has been to Mountain View in the past month and there are continued discussions
A New York Times spokesperson told us: “We have been collaborating with Google for quite some time and we continue to discuss a number of potential projects with them.”
Staffers at The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday were given a newly compiled list of rules for “professional conduct,” which included a lengthy guide for use of online outlets, noting cautions for activities on social networking sites.
eMarketer Predicts Social Media Advertising Will Fizzle in 2009
Bottom line, eMarketer is predicting a 3% decline in social network ad spending in 2009. That decline comes after a 129% increase in 2007 and a 33% increase in 2008.
Paid Search Traffic Declines 26%; Who Really Knows Why?
Surprisingly, the company makes a sweeping statement about the reason for this decline:
This is no doubt a result of cutbacks in marketing spend due to the recession.
Er, I have some doubt. For one thing, you’re own observations raise doubt:
Consistently, brand name terms (such as “travelocity”, “orbitz” and “walmart” saw a sharp decrease year over year in the share of paid clicks.
WolframAlpha Not Google Killer
imagine being able read and cross reference every piece of intellectual and scientific data recorded. Want to know what the path is of the X satellite? Want to see it laid out live right now and cross reference that info with the paths, orbit speeds, distances, etc since it’s launch? Bingo. Wolfram has your answer.
Their data showed that search is still a potent way to reach customers online, but driving consumers to search via display advertising is even more powerful.
Inside AdWords: Update to U.S. ad text trademark policy
Under certain criteria, you can use trademark terms in your ad text in the U.S. even if you don’t own that trademark or have explicit approval from the trademark owner to use it. This change will help you to create more narrowly targeted ad text that highlights your specific inventory.
Also, while we will start accepting new ads that contain trademark terms as of 11am PDT on May 15th, those ads will not begin showing until June 15th.
Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Introducing Rich Snippets
To display Rich Snippets, Google looks for markup formats (microformats and RDFa) that you can easily add to your own web pages. In most cases, it’s as quick as wrapping the existing data on your web pages with some additional tags.

Google Testing One Line Product Links in AdWords
We know Google allows products in AdWords now and we even know a way to make it happen for your ads.
An anonymous reader just sent me screen captures of Google testing a new way of displaying those products.
comScore has released the display ad rankings for March 2009 and Yahoo! takes the cake as the number one publisher. Yahoo! sites served up 42.8 billion ad views, which translates to 13.2% of the market share. Here are the top 10:
