Today is my kid’s favorite holiday.
We’ve been trick or treating all week long.
I suspect someday when he gets a little older he’ll have actual Halloween parties. But his birthday is November 7. So we often make it a Halloween/Birthday bash.
Why am I writing about Halloween on a blog that is mostly for business and marketing ideas?
Because that’s what everybody is talking about today!
A quick look at the Hot Searches on Google Trends makes that very, very clear:
I woke up thinking I’d talk about Chris Christie and his praise of Barack Obama during Hurricane Sandy.
I was thinking about what an amazing positioning that is for Chris Christie. He suddenly becomes this really interesting presidential contender in 2016 that could offer a whole new approach.
But no one cares.
People still care about the hurricane.
There are hot searches that include:
- Breezy Point
- LaGuardia Airport
- Peco
But more people are interested in the fact that “Taco Bell gives away free Doritos Locos Tacos after World Series” than they are about the NJ Transit and JFK Airport:
I have developed a saying: “You can either be right or you can do what works.”
I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen die on a hill because they insist on being right.
Sell what people are buying now. Don’t insist on selling a weak product.
So many people will focus on trying to get a slow moving product to catch on. While they all but ignore the product that everybody wants.
Stop that! Spend most of your time on what people are buying now with an eye on what you think they’ll buy tomorrow. Stop thinking about what they bought yesterday!
No one cares about Chris Christie and Barack Obama today.
It’s Halloween, Star Wars 7 and the NBA.
Sure, they are interested in knowing what is happening in particular cases of Hurricane Sandy.
But even the phrase “Hurricane Sandy” has fallen off the list.
What does it all mean? I have no idea.
But people want to talk about Halloween and Star Wars 7. So be it.
Happy Halloween everybody!
Here’s a picture of my kid (the one on the right) and his friend:
I have a picture of me being Mustard somewhere. That’s what I went as this year.
If I can find it I’ll post it.

Please find that picture, Mr. Mustard.
