One of the things that drives me crazy about conferences and articles is that they are all theoretical.
You hear or read some great ideas and then they send you out into the world to fend for yourself.
You then remember you hadn’t checked your email for like the last 10 minutes and that’s it. You are then off to the next thing.
Well this article is different. By the time you get to the bottom of this post you will be following at least 20 new people who relate to you and your industry on Twitter. That’s the key. You can follow 20 people easy. But the trick is to follow people who mean something to you.
The secret to making this work is to not go on in the article until you have tried each of the 3 things below.
Here we go:
#1: Scroll through this list: http://twitter.com/#!/who_to_follow/
It is a bunch of people that Twitter thinks you should follow for one reason or another.
Organizational Bonus Tip: You are going to find that you will start to collect more people than you can actually monitor at any one time. So when you add a person make a habit of putting them into a list. You will see a little icon of a head next to the button you just clicked to follow them. Click on that icon and select “Add to list.”
There are 3 tabs on this page:
- View Suggestions
- Browse Interests
- Find Friends
You might actually find 20 targeted people just by doing this step alone. But before you read on go do this. Just clickety-click on that link above. Go on now.
Alright. That was fun right. See. There are bunch of people that you will likely find interesting.
#2: Start searching around on http://listorious.com/.
It allows you to search for topics and people on Twitter. It’s a really handy tool.
You will find the tags on Listorious to be really helpful. Check these out: http://listorious.com/tags
Bonus Who To Follow Tip: Feel free to follow your competitors and thought leaders in your industry. But be sure you have a healthy dose of your potential customers and the places they hang out. Get in the circles your prospects are in. It’s hard to do. But that’s where the money is, not in your own industry.
So go hang out at Listorious for a few minutes. I know new tools are disorienting and make your brain hurt. But I’m a super slow learner. If I can do it you can do it. Just play around and get a feel for how to follow lists and people in this site. It’s a really handy place.
Don’t come back until you’ve found a few people to follow that interest you.
#3: Now check out http://wefollow.com/.
It is another directory of people to follow on twitter. Try searching in this site to find other people to follow. You very likely are going to find more interesting people to follow.
I did each of these things as I was writing this article. I lost count of how many people I followed. But it was easily 20 new people.
Following people is the first step in getting people to follow you.
Now that you are following them, start reading their stuff. Reply to them and retweet some good stuff they sent out. You will be making new connections in no time.
Happy tweeting!
